I remember reading something a few weeks back that said CSI style shows are the most popular on tv and based off of what people post here as their favorite shows it seems that it is true. What I am wanting to know is what everybody likes about these shows? I have never been into them and I have seen a few older ones, but not any of the new CSI:Every Major US City ones out now. There is also the NCIS which I guess is the same thing. So is the interests something like because it is fun to try and solve a mystery? I can understand that if it is the reason since I like things like that, although solving a crime is boring to me, but mysteries of unexplained things I find very interesting. Or is is something else?

I believe it's deeper than the entertainment value of solving a crime. After all, you don't get to solve it! Often, you can guess the perp at his/her introduction. The only "stumpers" come when they choose to make the perp someone who isn't introduced until almost the end. It just seems to me that people in the US are obsessed with nastiness! Death sells! And CSI style shows give an in different perspective on it. ( but logical progression from Murder She Wrote and Diagnosis Murder, etc. ) hmmmm seems I resemble that remark! I really like Sacred! And lots of other hack 'em up games!

hhhhmmm, death is something I did not think of, but at the same time there are lots of people who say that there is to much violence and all that so I would think they would not support the shows.

Okay this is waaay too funny.... Alucard asks me all the time why I like all those shows so much and watch almost nothing but them on TV cause he doesn't get it either It depends on the series why I like them.. All the Law & Order shows I like probably for a more morbid reason... I think it is interesting to see how insane people are in their attempts to get away with murder and all their sick reasons for murdering someone to begin with. Plus many of the episodes are based on true cases. They take tons of actual real life cases and just alter the names and maybe add a few details to spice them up. Like for instance there is one episode that I find really crazy. The premise is that this teenage boy gets murdered on the roof of a building and they connect these kids to it (I forget how). But anyway these kids are twins, one boy, one girl. And since the kid who got murdered has saliva in his groin area they test it and find out that it came from a male. So they assume that the boy twin is gay but got angry or embarrassed after giving fellatio and killed the kid for it. Well it turns out that both the twins were born boys but one had a freak accident happen while they were circumcising him so they gave him a sex change in infancy. A therapist swore that he could help raise the boy as a girl and that they would grow up to be a happy normal woman... but he also abused the kids during therapy and they were all messed up because of it. So anyway it was the "girl" twin that really did the killing because she was forced to give fellatio to the teenage boy and didn't want to. Well in real life there is a case that is exactly the same except for the murder part. But all the parts about the circumcision and sex change and abusive sick therapist are all true. That increases the interest for me. As far as CSI goes I just really enjoy all the insane forensic techniques of finding info out.

I can see if a story is based off of something true it will be more interesting. I used to like to watch Unsolved Mysteries, although after the late eighties they seemed to switch to mostly crimes so I lost interest and maybe that was a precursor to the CSI stuff. Is the CSI stuff based off of real things at all like Law and Order?

As far as I know they only base their forensic capabilities in truth... the cases aren't real though.

I don't believe EVERYTHING they say is true. I remember an instance in ER that what they said was incorrect based on what I knew about prescription drugs... I know it's not CSI but shows similar to that stretch the truth sometimes, and I wouldn't doubt that CSI does as well.
That being said I can't stand CSI, Law and Order, and anything else of that nature. Well except maybe that one with the smart guy brother that is really good at math (Numbers I think?). Other than that though.... bad. #rawr#

Well I guess I will just have to decide then that people are crazy and that is why they like them, although I am happy to see that Alucard does not understand either and that griffman does not like them either since usually it is hard to find people of similar thoughts.

If people really didn't like violence, Jerry Springer, WWE, NFL games, train, plane and automobile crashes, fires and other natural/unnatural disasters wouldn't be such great spectator sports! Is Springer still on?

CSI is a TV show, the new treky stuff. A little fact and a lot of imagination but still just a TV show. Don't get me wrong, I love trek stuff and CSI stuff. But if it was half real, we wouldn't have crims bashing about the streets. Tis only TV, see it for what it is. And i love detective stories, Sherlock is great!

If you'r a TV fan, Boston Legal, Makes me laugh out loud. and who says Kirk can't act? Unless he really does have mad cows in his head? The only show in many years to come from the US that made me laugh. What's the matter? Have all your comic writers went home? OOoops that was a bit droll.

The girl thing doesn't work, since I don't like the CSI's and neither do several women I know.

Well see I know there is lots of violent shows on tv, but I am just asking on the CSI ones due to them being the top shows and I am wondering why the more violent shows like you said are not if the violence is indeed a factor. Or I wonder why shows that are actual real life such as Americas Most Wanted are not higher.
Lets see though, the female dominace is an interesting point and maybe that has something to do with it. Like do the shows have the uber in depth story lines? Maybe not as much as like soap operas, but something that draws you in to feel for the characters?
The analogy to Trek stuff is interesting as well since I would never have made a connection like that and time will tell if the CSI stuff in the future has a cult following that people make fun of the fans, or people who are fans do not admit to it.
