240 and 160 average... not bad. My high game is 279 and I average 183. Not too bad for a crippled up old lady! LOL

LOL -+-Win32##Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0##1024 × 768##1-+- very impressive I have seen the most frail, fragile little old ladies embarrass me in bowling before. I bowled in a Sunday night league when i lived in Ohio. I was still trying to figure out what weight ball I was best with (13 or 14) and still had not found my lucky rosin bag. Now I have my shoes, bag, ball, special lucky towel and I don't bowl any more. go figure. next time you get up in the 270's have your husband take a picture of you pointing at the score!! (because the next ten games after that will be a let down!) -+-Win32##Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.5##800 × 600##1-+-

I was just kidding about being old and crippled up... though sometimes I feel that way.

Hehe, I just find it amazing that you have a higher average than me and yet I am the one with a 300 high game. Your average isn't that much higher though... only 11 pins.

#rude# That to your 300 Trev! If I ever actually shot a 300, I'd probably have a heart attack at the foul line. BTW, my husband finally got his 300 ring the other day... thought he was never going to get it! He'll probably never wear it anyway.

Well that's good. I will never get a ring for mine because it wasn't in league play. Would be nice though.

Becky and I just started bowling not too long ago. When we first started I was averaging about 90.. but I've improved some, now I'm averaging about 130. I guess we've been bowling for a half year or so.... hopefully I'll keep getting better. We have our own balls, but they are straight balls.. I don't really know any of the terminology, but it doesn't have the weight distributed so it hooks. I still try to hook the ball though, it hooks just slightly, but I'm just not very consistent. It's always a good feeling to let go of the ball and know you threw a perfect one... As far as my favorite sport.. I grew up playing and watching baseball, until I tore my rotator cuff, so I guess baseball is my favorite sport, with football as a close second. Bowling is getting up there, it's a lot of fun but it's not really easy for us to get to a bowling alley that often. We recently started going to one on campus that is really cheap... $1.50 a game for us. We're hopefully going to play more, and who knows, it may become my favorite sport

Am glad to know you like bowling, griffman. Most likely, if you're trying to make the ball hook and it doesn't, it's either made of plastic or is an old rubber one. Although you can make them do it, your accuracy will suffer greatly. The current trend is to not put your thumb in the ball. While you can get more turn on the ball and make it hook clear across the lane so it looks cool, it does nothing for you if want to be good at the sport. It is very difficult to roll the ball with any kind of accuracy that way. Very few who do this can pick up spares and have seen several injure themselves because they are so off balance when they get to the foul line that they fall.

Becky and I make fun of those people... It's really funny when they think they are so good because they can do that then get really angry when they miss or throw a gutter ball. Eventually I'll get a ball that can hook, but for now I can only stick with the plastic straight ball I have...

I don't blame for laughing at them, I do too. There is also a modified form of it that started in Europe where they use both hands and twist there arms behind their back and roll it. Makes me hurt just to watch them. It has been known to cause back problems.. duh!!! There are some who think they're all macho and crap when they take a really light ball and roll it as hard as they can. I tell them that even a little old lady like me with back problems can roll a 14 or 15 pound ball.

Have you ever seen the people that roll the ball that way but through their legs? I'm not saying they are all that accurate, but it's actually pretty cool watch. I hate the fact that they are denting the lanes when they throw the ball halfway down it... but it's still cool to watch now and again.
The lanes we go to have an option to show how fast you are rolling the ball.. we used it last time we went. I found that I average throwing the ball about 17 mph, whereas my friends seem to try their hardest to throw the ball really hard and they barely touch 14 mph. Becky and I decided it was form, because it's really hard for me to throw it slower than 17 mph and really easy for me to get it up to 20+ mph. We had to tell my friend which leg to put forward when bowling... so thats why we attributed it to form..
I know that if you throw it more slowly the ball has more chance to hook, but I hope you can help me out by answering this question... is 17 mph too hard? Should I work on throwing the ball more slowly?

When me and my husband were dating we went bowling all the time, and got pretty good at it too. They used to have Rock and Bowl nights where they would kill the lights, play loud rock and roll and use strobe lights for lighting the lanes. There nothing like trying to line up, with Ozzy blaring and the lane looks like its rolling from the lights I have nerve damage in my hands so I cant bowl anymore but boy I do miss it.

I'm sorry to hear about the nerve damage in your hands, Ari. Man, that's got to be rough.
Actually, Griffman, that's a good speed. Mine is 16+ mph, most of it do to a high back swing. 20+ mph might be a little too fast, depending on how you roll the ball. If it's rolling fast, but is rolling and not skidding you're doing ok. You are correct about it being a question of form and style, not strength. Actually, the strength can work against most people. The ball needs to be rotating, not skidding when it hits the pins. The more it skids, the more it bounces off the pins. I see so many guys get mad and kick things when they leave back row splits, five pins and corner pins, when it was actually because of the way they rolled the ball. We call it being DOA, or a marshmallow ball... made by Kraft you know. Mostly they try to blame the lane man, which gets really irritating. LOL
Oh and I have seen people throw it between their legs. Not allowed here at all. Neither is throwing it halfway down the lane. If the lanes are synthetic, they're not doing so much damage. But they can really do some damage to wood lanes.

I'm not really sure how to tell which the lanes are, especially since the synthetic material would obviously be made to look like wood, and then both are covered with oil to make them slick.. but I have seen dents in the lanes. I've never seen one actually created, but I have seen the physical dent in the lane, and the reaction of the ball to it. It seems to like bounce out of the divot.. and I knew that throwing the ball in the air could cause a dent, not to mention disturb all the bowlers around you...
Since we live in a college town (because we are going to college) we see a lot of idiots at the bowling alley. I know that almost sounds backwards, idiots at college, but it's the truth. It seems people my age show no consideration for anything at all except themselves. When you try to ask them to stop throwing the ball halfway down the lane they'll just throw it further... I wish the managers at our lanes cared enough to throw them out or tell them to stop.

You know, Griff, it's always saddens me to see lanes that are not taken care of or when the managers don't care. It's hard on people like you who really want to do well. And you're right, large divots will make the ball bounce or wobble and change the way it's rolling. Sad thing. Most likely if there are large divots on the lanes then they're wood. Synthetics are pretty tough like a counter top. They are made to look like wood, but the grains and boards are not as pronounced as in real wood and they're usually lighter and more uniform looking.
