Martin posted in another thread that there are a number of references to things in Underworld that most likely non-German people wouldn't spot since they are about more local things to the German's rather than obvious things that people worldwide would know... such as Star Wars lightsabers....
Personally I find all this trivia stuff really interesting so I think we ought to start a new thread where anyone who wishes to can post trivia on what the various references throughout the game means. Also if anyone spots something that they think must be an easter egg but doesn't have a clue what it is referring to you can ask about it here and hopefully someone will be able to give us an answer!
If we gets lots of response to this thread I'll do a contents in this first post to keep it organized...

What I can offer the community is mostly trivia stuff, I guess, like references that aren't apparent unless you're familiar with Germany, or small things like translation errors. (The Arachnophobia quest should say 'Stones, side without heart, no stones, side with heart', for instance. It simply means to keep right / left.) Stuff like that.

Where to start, when almost the entire game is one gigantic leg-pull? Oh, I know: 'Death to the Ogre Referee' (Tod dem Schiedsoger). It refers to the German Football Scandal of 2005. The ogre referee is called 'Oddhäuser', a hint at one of the guilty parties in that series of incidents, and Chairman Myerfield (Vorsitzender Meierfeld) is none other than Gerhard Mayer-Vorfelder, president of the German Football Union at the time. In the German version, after you've finished the quest, your character's quest log will say that they didn't accept a ' Zwanziger ("a twenty" = € 20 note)' that the chairman offered them on top of their quest reward. Did you have anything particular in mind, or should I just ramble on with whatever comes to mind as I play along? Is Karl Ranseier's grave (in the Sakkara district of Mystdale) in the English version, too? Edit: I forgot to mention: You can play UW with the old / golden interface from Plus, all you need to do is unpack the textures and rename them.

Well, about Karl Ranseier: Look at the picture of the gentleman with his old-fashioned, twirly moustache in the previous post, and memorise it well, along with the name "Karl Ranseier" and the phrase " Karl Ranseier is dead." Now imagine this: Every Saturday night, for several years, there's a straight-faced comedian reading a news spoof, during which the above picture well be shown, and a piece will be read which will say "Karl Ranseier is dead. The most unsuccessful ( ... ) died ( recently ) when ( his job as his undoing )". A few years after the show's demise, Karl Ranseier is still a part of the public memory, and you buy a new game, and explore the world, when you come across this: ... ... To most of the players of the German version, this is at least as funny as Rincewind's grave.

Cool! So the next question is... who is Rincewind?

Once I find Rincewind's grave again (I have a general idea where it is), I'll show it. Sacred was based on a game called Armalion, and it was originally set in the world of the Dark Eye. The Amazon and the Barbarian, and the other generic RPG characters in the game, as well as almost all of the buildings and artwork were taken from that game and turned into Sacred. The reason is simple: the developer, Ikarion, went bankrupt, and Ascaron jumped in, and they took over a lot of the developers, too. Once the game was no longer Armalion but Sacred, Armalion was laid to rest (in Wolvental/Wolfdale): (Here lies A.R. Malion) There is a hint whether or not a horse can cause trouble like freezing your character: Such a horse doesn't have a blue dot on the minimap. Here's an example, the horse on the left:

If you are familiar with Terry Pratchett's Discworld books (check www.lspace.org for a LOT of information), you will know the name Rincewind. He is the famous sourcerer who wouldn't die. Well. This is about Sacred, right? Rincewind - finally!!! (According to Terry Pratchett, the use of exclamation marks is an indicator of a lack of sanity. The more exclamation marks, the more insane.) His grave is in the small graveyard that spawns items on the way to Shaddar's Tower:

In Braverock, there's a side quest called 'An Officer and a Gentleman'. The quest giver's name is Ancala da Andelina Fintaria. What was the name of Ascaron's community manager again?

According to one of the statues, she was the one the game world is named for. And of course, there's Adelina in Silver Creek. King Aarnum, likewise, seems to be named after Aarne Jungerberg, the lead designer.

Even more Anca, next to Adelina's house: (In memory of Anca) A cryptic one from Mascarell: Near the Portal, there's a novice who will greet you with "En Taro" every other turn. Sound familiar? In StarCraft, the player is greeted with "En Taro Adun, Executor" during the Protoss campaign.

Great fun, all these insider jokes and puns ...Ŋє۱Єlєοѕ Rincewind was a pawn of The Lady (whose name must not be mentioned), she made sure he survived so that she wouldn't lose the games she played against Fate. (Rincewind could sometimes hear the sound of rolling dice.) The first book was "The Colour of Magic", and his hat said "WIZZARD" on it. Sourcerer/Sourcery refers to a later book called "Sourcery". Please let me know if I've missed any subtitles.

I came across the website of Spellcraft Studios who did the original animations when the game was still called "Armalion". Ignore the "Internet Explorer required" message, go to "projects" and click the Sacred icon. In the top left corner of the page that comes up, click on "characters" to see the original protagonists, or click "cinematics" to view the original intro or the ECTS trailer from 2000. www.spellcraft.de/html/e_index.htm
