It sucks, it is just too hard to do it. Now I know that me working nights now has made it so its hard to get to sleep at normal people times, but even when I am tired I can not seem to fall asleep anymore, and even when I do its only for like 4 hours before I wake up. Its all due to my brain being stupid and not wanting to quit thinking. I tried some Lunesta pills a few weeks ago and all they did was make my mouth taste like crap for like a day or so. I am hoping though that when I start to get back into doing physical things like going to the gym that I will get tired enough to just fall asleep even if my brain is not tired. Anybody know of a way I can disconnect my brain so ill fall asleep and then somehow be able to still reconnect it in the morning?

This little trick used to work for me when I worked nights and couldn't sleep. It sounds strange (imagine that) but it works. While trying to fall asleep, mentally repeat the same word such as "mind" over and over. Other thoughts will intrude, but just go back to the word as soon as you think of it. Mind is a good word to use since it won't generally bring up a lot of other mental images. I hope it helps... at least more than the Lunesta.

You're overstimulated.... in a bad way.
How should I say this... it's like haywire... you got the wrong work out for the wrong amount and with no cool downs, it's like diesel... the hotter it gets the better it performs... but like all fuel it burns itself out and you're an eager machine (uknowingly) that's out of fuel to burn but still in high gear...
when your body finally realizes that your out or in minimal condition it pulls the breaks and your "car" being in gear 5 takes the pressure of the pedal but still moving too fast to slow down... you decided to sleep when you released your foot but the car is still moving.... either you hit a tree or slow down eventually... but either way it's not fast enough for your need to sleep to materialize
meds will usually make you dependent... especially if it works.... case to case basis though... hmm...
honestly I have the same problem with my profession, just that I have problems sleeping at nights
warm milk works occassionally... slight eating... but it will make you bloat massage if a partner is present

I've been feeling the same way as of late with being unable to sleep till at least 3 or 4 in the morning. What Ive found to help with it is either to play Sacred till I almost- die helps disconnect what ever is rampaging through my mind) than I go and read till the book hits my nose. as long as Im thinking about things that dont involve RL I can generally get to sleep.

I have not tried that word thing there Hal, sounds like it may work though since the best thing for me to do is to try to get my mind to focus on one singular thing. It used to be that having the white noise would work, but now it does not, and it used to be that I could listen to music, but now my mind is more advanced and simply sings along with the music as it thinks on other things, damn multitasker. I think Deon's response sounds good too, I just have to hit a tree basically right? I have one in my yard, so if I get you right I just have to bash my head into it until I induce a coma? Only thing is that may be hard to do since by your description I now think I am a Transformer in disguise. And then Ari brings up a good point of reading, it works for me sometimes, so I should try it again. I did try the real life escape too last night by watching 300, so I went to bed a little after 6 here I think, and since I fell asleep then finally I guess it worked.

Sometimes that works, sometimes I cant sleep still since there will be some non constant noise for me to focus on, or ill just get to thinking about how much it sucks, and then tangents from there. Tonight my plan for sleep is to start studying for my final tomorrow. Right now I have 9 hours before it is and I dont really know much of anything that will be on it, so I figure I can try to study for a bit and it should make me sleepy and then ill go sleep and hopefully wake up with enough time to study some more.

The word thing really does work well. After you use it for a while, if you can do it for like 20 minutes without falling asleep you can actually feel as though you've slept for a while. There's no substitute for sleep, but it does help. You just need to remember to keep the word you use neutral. Good luck Area!

Well the body has several natural sleeping pills.... I just can't discuss it here... Well the hit a tree was a metaphor but that works too ;D Stretching helps release some wound up muscles... or you can try.. well I ran out of options I will research on it more... I have a friend who studies nocturnal persons so I will inquire with him... as I know he's an MD that specializes in sleep disorders, but all I know for sure is that he's an MD...

I tired the word thing last night, and it actually seemed to work some, but after a while I found that I was falling sleep, so I would forget to push out the things that came to my mind and eventually end up back to where I started. All in all I dont think I ever fell asleep last night, but then again I did goto bed with only allowing myself around 5 hours of sleep time and my body tends to think that around that much sleep time it is pointless to sleep anyway. I also have heard that telling my mind to basically shut up, that it can think on what it wants later in the day works, it seems to for me sometimes, but it wants to think on things later in like 10 minutes. Maybe after today is over I will be able to sleep more since ill be done with my evil summer class at school.

I did get to sleep last night, but not as I planned. I wanted to goto sleep early, but did not get to sleep until around 5am. I went earlier then that but my mind was too active, so I got up and rode my bike around and got my mail for a bit and that seemed to help some. I am not sure on the final yet since it is not graded yet, but I am not planning on it being good. I did not study much and I was and still am sick, so I know that affected things too.

Arghhh I am so sorry AREA.... I am in the same boat right now. My mind won't shut up long enough to allow me to fall asleep and it really sucks cause Lily is going to summer school 3 days a week and I have to get up at 7:30AM to get her ready... which is tremendously early for me. Even during the normal school year we only have to get up at 8AM! Arghh! Also what really sucks is that I get to the point where I am finally soooo exhausted that I start to fall asleep sitting up and it always happens when Alucard is at work and Lily is awake so then I have to forced myself to stay awake to supervise her. Then of course my the time she goes to bed I am so over tired that I get hyper! I hate that!!!
