I really have to get this off my chest before I have a heart attack or something.
I was just about to cross at an intersection the other day when a car came roaring up and made a right turn in front of me. as the car passed, I noticed that the driver was also doing something else at the same time.
At first I assumed it was a cell phone (which ticks me off; unless your call is so important that it cannot wait, this should not be done). When I was across the road I realized it could not have been a cell phone, the display was much too big. It was a mini-laptop.
How on earth someone can honestly do this is beyond me. This is an even more dangerous distraction from the road than a cell phone. If you are zipping along at 80-90 kilometers per hour (which is about 45-50 miles per hour) there is a fairly large margin for error.
This goes double for anyone with passengers. By not paying full attention to the road, you are placing your passengers at risk, too. All it takes is not paying attention to the road for 2-3 seconds to have an accident. The driver in front of you could brake. Your car could drift (off the road or into the oncoming traffic, either way is dangerous). The light you are approaching could change. Another driver nearby could lose control.
My point is, when you are in a car moving at such speeds, do you really want to divide your attention? I am not saying don't use your cell phone, or change the radio/CD, or adjust your AC. What I am saying is be responsible. Turning off a song you don't like or calling home to say you are on your way can wait until you are through the intersection or have made that turn.
Normally, I would have no problems with people lacking in sense removing themselves from the gene pool, but these people who have to constantly multi-task while driving are threatening to take innocent people with them. This has to stop. Just because you can do these things while driving does not necessarily mean you should.
Thank you for humouring me. I feel a little better now.

Ohmigod!!! And there is this freakin' State Farm Insurance commercial now too about it. I think that is the name of the company anyway, but this commercial is advertising their "accident forgiveness" program. I don't know all the details but it is something having to do with the extra money you have to pay the insurance company when you get into an accident. I guess you get a freebie where you won't get charged, or maybe the time you get charged more is less, I am not sure. But the whole commercial shows one multi-tasker after another.... one guy changing his pants while driving, another eating a salad I think (whatever it was needed a fork so hence two hands), a woman putting on mascara, etc, etc. I haaate this commercial!!! Which I should have written this in the hated commercial thread but since you brought up multi-tasking drivers.... This commercial is basically telling those morons that take things way too literally that you can go ahead and do this stupid stuff while you drive and you'll be forgiven for it!!!
In my opinion this is not forgivable!!! I will admit that I have done some stuff that I probably shouldn't while driving like eating french fries (which only takes one hand since I place the container between my legs), and putting my hair into a knot (no hair brush and when I do this it is just to keep it out of my face while I drive so I don't care how it looks so I can do it fast at a red light). But I have seen people reading a newspaper or even a novel while driving in heavy traffic before!! As well as all the things mentioned above from the commercial... it is just ridiculous!!!! Arghh!!
Even the cell phone.... if it really is something THAT important pull over to the side of the freakin' road and make your phone call! For anything all that important it should take but a minute and then you can be back on your way. But noooo too many people these days evidently think driving is boring so call someone the second they get behind the wheel for entertainment. They should all be hanged as far as I am concerned. It didn't used to bother me but since I had my daughter all I can think of is that some moron is going to cause an accident that gets her killed or seriously hurt. And I swear to you all that if that ever does happen I am sooo hunting the person down and they will wish for death long before they get it!
Okay yeah that was totally dramatic but his topic just gets me really worked up and I am VERY protective of my daughter on top of that so...

I figured at least yourself and Ari would agree with me, seeing that both of you are often on the road with a child in the backseat. When I see people doing just about anything that takes their attention off the road for too long, it gets me all worked up (and then I need to take my pills ). Seriously, though. I get very anxious when I'm driving. Partly because I don't feel comfortable with the knowledge that it doesn't take that big a mistake on my part to harm someone else or myself. It does not help much that other drivers are not paying as much attention to the road as they should be. If something either takes your eyes off the road or both hands off the wheel, it's dangerous. When I was about ten years old, my father and I were driving and had to go under a railroad track (I can't remember where we were headed). At the other end of this underpass was an intersection with a stoplight. As we were going through, the light turned red and we were left parked going uphill. Suddenly, our car lurched forward and there was a crash. We had been rear-ended on a section of road going uphill. My dad got out of the car and had a talk with the driver who rear ended us, who apologized by saying "Sorry, dude. I was changing my tape and didn't see you." This guy couldn't have been much more than 18 or 19 at the time. I'm still amazed every time I think of that. (For the record, we needed about $1000 in repairs, so he must have hit us with a fair amount of force)

Just got around to watching it ... That was hilarious! I wish I had done that the last time someone got impatient at me for crossing the street! (I jog across, so it's not like they have to wait long, I think they're just miffed about having to actually stop. Heaven forbid anything should delay them driving to the gym at the end of the block.) BTW, it looks like he got out of the car afterwards. Anybody know what happened next (he looks like he might give granny a piece of his mind).

Ok so this lady wasn't multitasking, but nonetheless she was a terrible driver. I was driving through a Publix parking lot with my girlfriend today and a lady sideswiped me. She came out of a lane going the wrong way, pulled out... I honked, she continued to pull out, I swerved, she rammed me. There were at least 3 or 4 people that saw it happen and no one stopped.. She tried to blame the whole thing on me. She tried to say that she was just sitting facing the wrong way in the road and I ran into her with the side of my car. How the hell does that work? All that and she gave me fake information. I was too nice of a guy to want to call the police and get insurance involved, I was just going to get her name, address, and tele # and give her a call with the price of the estimate. I called her this evening to be sure it was her and it was a disconnected phone #. Of course, I was stupid not to verify her information, but I'm a trusting person. Maybe a little too trusting at times. I hate people.

God Grif!! I am sooo sorry!! But a bit of advice..... ALWAYS call the police... if they are the type that are willing to do it without the ins. companies getting involved when it was their fault then they are also DEFINITELY the type to give false info.!!!
