There are two ways to end this quest: 1. Agree to the whim of the evil mage and bring him the nervous system of the spider you ought to kill. Quest ends on the favor of evil. 2. Agree to kill the monster but once you confront it, accept its offer to bring the nervous system to the mage trapped below the evil mage NPC that initiated the quest. You should have the key, and the spider nervous system. If you do this the mage in the dungeon rewards you and the quest ends in favor of the good side. Somehow the 2nd way to end it does not work for everyone. Even if you have the nervous system and the key the door to the dungeon is always locked. The 1st ALWAYS works. It's trial and error. We strongly suggest you save before accepting the quest if you want the 2nd way to end it.

South from Moorbrook is a mage that gives the quest to kill a giant spider in a cave and bring back its nervous system (spine), the spider will talk to you, accept and bring the brain back to the mage. Now for the glitch, if instead you enter the underground cave next to the mage WITHOUT giving him the spine first(will turn hostile when you give it to him), when underground click on the gate, it won't open and then go back the mage, the gate will remain shut and cannot be opened even if you kill the mage and take the key. Therefore talk to the mage first before going underground to finish the quest As you mentioned you need to talk to the mage first before going down but if you do, he does indeed turn hostile but now he doesn't. If you talk to him BEFORE entering the passage way to the underground dungeon, the quest will be finished and he turns to an NPC. Originally you can go down without talking to him because there is a key already retrieved supposibly to open the dungeon. So it is indeed possible to go down without talking to him and still finish the quest coz there are 2 ways to end it just like that witch quest near... hell I think moorbrook too it's been a while. NOTE: The different glitches and the ways that quests turn out can be different depending on what version of the game you are playing!!
