There is a common English word that is nine letters long. Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?

I keep thinking the answer is Americans, but I run into problems with two of the possible words (ameri and americ). Like I have..
A - Obvious Am - Obvious Ame - African Methodist Episcopal Church (although that is based on an acronym) Amer - A Dutch river Ameri - ?? Americ - ?? America - Obvious American - Obvious Americans - Obvious

I have a quick question, Can the letters be added anywhere in the word to form the larger ones or can the letters only be added to the start or the end. I was trying it from 1 letter and working to the full one..like this... and wanted to see if I was too far off. a an and land lands island

I think the way it goes is you have to take on off from the end, but I could be wrong, so we need hal to come in and let us know, and maybe give a hint if we all keep being stumped.

Startling Starting- removed L Staring- removed a T String- removed A Sting- removed R Sing- removed T Sin- removed G in- removed S I- removed n
Don't think it's the right answer, english riddles ain't my strong side, hehe.

If you can take the letter out from anywhere then it sure looks like he did. If he got it then I am going to be annoyed since there is some riddle I heard that is similar that has the American thing as the answer and I will have to find it.

Holy crap, you telling me I nailed it!? And Wolfe, I am asocial, but also very stubborn and have no problem taking a challenge, maybe I should have told you that before I made you cocky enough to make that deal. Hm, my turn to post a riddle, well guess I should be able to find one, hehe. *Wanders off back into the shadows with an evil grin on his face*

If you know of any that are native to Sweden that would be cool, see if one of us Americans can figure it out as easily as you did ours.
