I just got my first character up to Niobium difficulty. It's a big jump up in difficulty from Platinum. I'm wondering if I don't have to fundamentally change the way I play in order to deal with this difficulty, or if I should stay at lower difficulties until I get to a higher level.
I'm 120th level dual-wielding gladiator though I'm thinking about using other characters too.
I've set up his equipment as a generalist. All of his resistances are about the same level, and I'm doing the same thing with damage. His primary weapons are dual-wielded Enlightened Irons which already mix physical, fire, and magic. I've thrown in some equipment to add poison as well. I'm wondering if it's necessary to start redoing the sockets to deal with each new area: get heavy poison resistance and fire damage when going to Verag-Nar, get heavy fire resistance and poison damage for Alkazaba noc Draco, etc. That seems wasteful since you can't retrieve all your socketed items when you change, but I'm prepared to accept that it may be necessary. I have weapon groups designed to deal specialized damage, but I never use them because Enlightened Irons have always been good enough and only they give a bonus to magic find.
I'm also wondering if there's a quick way to get new characters up to higher levels. I don't want to cheat and use an editor, but it took around 100 hours of play to get one character up to 120th level. I'd like to experiment with different builds without putting in that kind of time. I'm wondering if there's secret that can be used like the pong or pacman game that can rocket characters up levels quickly.
