I am currently playing this game and find it rather entertaining. I am playing the PC version, but it is on the 360 and PS3 as well, so a lot of people can play it.
I never played the older games, and it seems like you do not really need to have done so since the game makes sense.
It is like a mixture of an RPG and first person shooter game, so I think it can appeal to a lot of people. There are not too many quests in it, so you wont be bogged down, but the ones that are there tend to be really long in length. I am not sure how long it takes to beat the game, but I have 43 hours invested right now, and while I am at the currently allowed max character level, I still have probably about half the side quests to do, two thirds of the main story to do, and two expansions, with a third that comes out later this month. So I think if people wanted to do a lot in it they would spend like 100+ hours.

I'm playing Fallout right now! I looooove it!! The same people that did Elder Scrolls: Oblivion did this game too so the controls and character build areas are very similar. It is such a blast. I didn't realize there were already two expansions though!!! I'll have to see if they are available for the PS3 version!!!
