I am dumb, and need help on this very basic matter. The "math" in the game is beyond me. I just want to walk around and solve quests. I currently have one of each character. The only character that so far shows any natural bias of any sort is the wood elf, who obviously is meant to be a ranged fighter and use bows. None of the other characters, at least up to around lvl 10-ish, show no natural bias at all. My first character, a Seraphim, has no problems at all with balanced everything. She started with a sword, so that is what I thought would be best. She is a powerhouse now at around lvl 40. but... I took a gamble and tried a Battle Mage, assigning lvl points where I guessed they should be. As the character starts with a staff, and is a "mage", I spent the points where I expected they would benefit staff and magic. By level 18 the poor fellow is getting pwn'd I really do not have the patience or ability to try and decipher the "math" for every character. Obviously I got lucky with the Seraphim, but I am putting the poor Battle Mage through hell. Can someone pls just let me know there each character's native abilities lie, so I do not have to torture any of my other characters? I have one of each at around lvl 10 (or so) right now, but do not want them to end up the same way as my poor battle mage.

First off part of what is great about this game is that depending on the Skills, Attributes, Combats Arts and gear you choose you can completely customize all the characters to your liking. However I can tell you some of the most popular styles for the different classes...
Wood Elf- Mostly she is best overall with a bow in my opinion. But you have a choice when you choose her combats arts on whether you want her to be magic, combat or both. Some favorites for combat are Penetrating Arrow and Explosive Arrow which can both be devastating at higher levels. And her most popular magic skill is Call of the Ancestors which is just sick, taking out enemies by just walking near them pretty much. I prefer to use both methods... I call CotA to take out enemies while I help with my Penetrating Arrows.
Seraphim- She is mostly melee and works great with a long handled staff or spear or with a sword. She can even duel wield with swords which is fantastic. Some favorites of her spells are BeeEffGee which send balls of electricity out of a conjured staff at the enemies and Rotating Blades of Light which is like a rotating shield around her that heavily damages enemies while you strike them with your weapon.
Vampiress- The most popular build for her is melee while in vampire form and in my opinion her best combat art is Attack. She is best I think with an axe or sword.
Gladiator- He is the ultimate fighter... 100% melee whatever you do. Some greats for him are Heroic Courage which boosts your defense and Dagger Stare which is an aura around his feet that damages enemies from a distance. At high enough levels you can just walk through a group and they will drop dead at your feet. He can master ANY weapon type.
Battle Mage- He is a pure magic build although he can use almost any weapon... you don't really use the weapon to attack you just equip it for its abilities. Some of the most popular spells for him are Fire Spiral, Ice Shards and Gust of Winds. Most importantly you want to max out Ghost Meadow so that you can cast your spells much faster.
Dark Elf- He is mostly a trapper but does melee and traps equally in most cases. His most popular traps are Poison Mist and Explosive Charge... I personally prefer Poison Mist. The trick with him is that you want to max out Adrenaline and Testosterone to heavily increase his defense and damage. I prefer swords or blades with him.
Deamon- She is the ultimate hybrid character. You can use all melee, all magic or a mix of both. All of her "forms" can be really useful it is all personal preference and for the more magical combats arts most people like Blazing Discs and Infernal Power. She is also pretty open on weapons but swords I think are most popular with her.
Dwarf- He is all about magic finding ability, forging, trading and his technology. Most people use Greed and the Forge Skill the most with him to find and socket items. They also use him as a trader with the trading skill. A lot of people only use him to find items or runes for other characters rather than as a main character, but those who do use him seem to prefer Flamethrower above all else. He works best with guns or axes.
Again the game is all about personal preference and customization but the above at least tells you the most popular of uses for each character. It would take forever to go into all the Skill and Attribute choices for all the characters but you can find more info. on those at my web page and of course there are full character builds that have all those details listed per style. Some are here at the forum, there are some at the Official Sacred Forum and there are also tons at the Dark Matters forum.

Another thing I'd like to add to what Wolfe said... the BM tends to be weaker throughout the lower levels. It won't be until about 40 or maybe a little higher that he will be a killing machine.
