There has been some recent discussion on the official forum about trying to prevent people from duping items or possibly banning them for this offense.... so I had a chat with Carolyn_Hacker. I have always discouraged any illegal breaking of the user agreement and copyright laws of any games... but I didn't realize that duping fell into this category. Well I was wrong... here is a quote from the user agreement that comes with Sacred: "You will not knowingly exploit any bug in Sacred, nor will you communicate or distribute any such bugs for exploitation by other players. Where possible, you will promptly report any such bugs by email to service_sacred@ascaron.com."Therefore, from now on I discourage anyone from duping items and will not allow members of my clan to dupe any longer. Also if anyone is known for this offense they will be blacklisted for it. Sorry all

I didn't know that duping still worked? I will make sure that I abide by this new clan rule....... Long live the clan.

This is rather surprising. I have never heard of a company getting mad at people for exploiting a bug before, especially this late in the game. Normally bugs get fixed, but we know how Ascaron likes to fix bugs as seen by the region boss "fix", but oh well. Maybe this is a result of how bad the open servers have gotten.

That was actually part of the orignal user game agreement that has always been in effect, I just never read the whole thing. But I had Carolyn check it for me when this issue came up on the Official forum.

Ah, very well then. Thought it was like an addition done recently. I never read the things anyway, but it makes me wonder that if this has been in effect for so long then why were things allowed to be duped and whatnot for so long before anything might be done about it.

It isn't like it was "allowed" they just didn't know how to stop it... and still aren't sure how.

I suppose it would be hard to stop it, unless they could make some code that would scan your inventory and if you have more then like 3 of the same set or unique item you are probably duping it. Then for things like runes that are common maybe like 15 or more of one kind would be considered duping. Maybe what they will do with S2 is make it so you can only use characters kept on their servers, or you could like upload your sp character to them to review before allowing you to use it online.

Well they could just cut off completely how people are duping... Either not take the servers down at all (because they reset when you leave anyways) or take the servers completely down. The already duped items are going to be too hard to find... and making a program similar to Rust Storm from Diablo would take too much manpower- especially since they are trying to make a new game right now. They've already delayed S2 enough....
Rust Storm was similar to what you said AREA- except it went into the codes of each item everyone had in their inventory and deleted any item that was copied, even if it was by another person. So if I had a Ber rune that someone duped and traded to me, both his and my Ber rune would "poof" when either of us left a game without "perming" the rune. Rust storm was the original reason I left diablo..I traded for a bunch of stuff throughout the time I was playing, then it all began disappearing.
I think they should just cut their losses and figure out how to stop duping now...

Well don't worry too much... from my understanding Ascaron themselves are not all worked up about it or anything. I mean they obviously don't want people to do it since they DID put that clause in their user agreement... but this isn't an issue that they brought up. But there ARE some players that believe in following the rules and feel like something needs to be done. It is along the lines of " hey why are they getting "rewarded" for breaking the rules and I'm the good guy playing the way I should and not getting anything for it"... that kind of thinking. So understandably they get ticked when others benefit from cheating and they would like it to stop. Therefore Carolyn is trying to come up with a way to stop it and find out from Ascaron if it is even possible. Like I said she hasn't told me what that way is, but my guess would be something along the lines of adding additional programing to ensure that EVERYONE always gets kicked during the server downtime so that it isn't possible to dupe. But there hasn't been any talk of creating a program to delete copies or anything...

Is there any real reason for the servers to go down at 8:15 AM EST and 10:00 PM EST? especially since each individual server resets everytime people exit.... Every other game I've played only brings the servers down to either fix glitches or to search for bots, but in Sacred it seems that they just bring the server down because they can..

To be honest I don't know... you should ask this on the Official Forum.

Atleast when I play the HC rooms, they go down just for maintenance each day done on whoever hosts them now end. Maybe they just reboot the computers or something, although I am unsure as to how the games would still remain online if that was the case, unless one of the people in the game just gets handed temporary hosting of it. Then to move more back to topic all I think they should do about this for S1, is well nothing. It is so far gone that nothing short of that Rust program you were talking about would fix it, but I do not like that idea of only being able to have one of each item in inventory, since some items you can easily get two of, like Enligtened Iron. But what they should do is focus ideas onto S2 so that this will not be a problem in the future, or atleat minimized.

Er, newbie here.
What's duping? I don't want to find myself doing it all unawares.
Cheers,
Dangly.

Duping is using a glitch in the game to make multiple copies of an item.
