...or more commonly known as a particle accelerator. At CERN they have completed construction on the largest and most powerful of these accelerators, and will turn it on in about a month. They are fun machines though, which can be used to try and explain mysteries, like the beginning of the universe, or to find new atomic particles that are only theorized about. This new one has some people scared though since they think it could create miniature black-holes which would consume the Earth.
