Our lives are awash in numbers; in song titles, in verse, in slang, in movies and quotes (these are all hints, People!). So here are a few little things to bend your brain (some may be slightly altered or shortened for clarity), which sprang from the toilet of my mind as a surprise substitute for a midterm (I gave three midterms - Yes, I know, I KNOW it's a contradiction in terms - allowing students to drop their worst) . The title derives from using numbers as an integral (and Yes, the pun is intentional) part of the first theme I used. Other themes can be more cleverly named - I do like Coloratura Conga for a theme using colors!
The Game:
Each round of the game is based on a unique theme. This could be numbers, colors, animals, etc. The object of Numba Rumba is to complete each phrase based on a single revealed word in each of those phrases. This word has to be part of the theme.
To give you a clearer idea of of the game, here is an example with the answers in parentheses -
The theme is Animals:
___ Lion ___ ___ (The Lion Sleeps Tonight)
___ ___ ___ Dragon (Puff the Magic Dragon)
The example is very short to avoid the risk of giving an example that would make a great phrase in a later game!
Each game can have as many phrases as you can come up with that fits your theme, to a maximum of 25. These phrases can be movie titles, book titles, song titles, band names, popular quotes, idioms, etc; Anything that is well known enough that it has a reasonable chance of being figured out.
The Rules:
1. All phrases have to be 8 words or less (we don't want them to be too hard). In supplying the phrase, punctuation is ignored. Again, the revealed word MUST be part of the theme. At their discretion, the Host may supply a hint to a phrase (in parentheses after the phrase, please), but if they choose to do so, MUST supply hints to ALL phrases. Please make the hints as clever and fun as possible!!
2. Players may make a guess on as many phrases at a time as they want, but cannot make a guess on the same phrase more than once per 24 hours. By that I mean you must wait till the next day to try again. We want to give everyone a fair chance at playing.
3. Once a game is over the person who "Hosted" it is responsible for counting up the points and posting them in the Game Points Won thread so that Wolfe can award them.
4. Do not Host a game unless you're prepared to visit at least every other day to monitor progress and confirm or deny the guesses thus far. (We do understand reality sometimes rears its ugly head though, so exceptions will be made if needed!)
5. Each time a phrase is guessed correctly the Host should modify their original post in the following way to show the answer, so that it is easier for players to know which phrases are left to be played.
Remove the underscores and enter the correct phrase, followed by the winners screen name. So using the examples above:
___ Lion ___ ___ would become: The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Area666
___ ___ ___ Dragon would become: Puff the Magic Dragon - Ari
6. The Host shall be the Ultimate Judge of the accuracy of each entry! There shall be no whining, lest the Supreme Sultaness of Sarcasm and Smiting be disturbed in her slumber and emerge, to great wailing and gnashing of teeth!
Scoring:
When a phrase is guessed correctly the player earns 10 points. In some cases it may be possible to fill in the phrase differently than the Host intended such as:
Lion's _____ (this could be filled in with two different idioms: Lion's Den or Lion's Share)
In these instances it is up to the Host to decide how they want to handle it. If the Host believes that the phrase they intended for the puzzle is a better one than they can deny completion and leave the puzzle open for other players to guess at. However, if the Host likes the player's phrase better they can award them the winner with a bonus of 1 (one) GENIUS point for being more clever than the Host!
If the Host stumps everyone on a phrase, they earn 10 points. (The Host should wait at least a week or until everyone playing says they are stumped before giving the answer and taking the points.)
NOTE: There is no limit to how many games can be going at once so feel free to host a game whenever you want!! Just remember that each game has to have its own thread.
And...thanks to Mother Wolfe for help in structuring this offering (She only did so under duress and to increase her post-count!)
