Melee Dwarf Guide
Introduction
I wrote this guide for two reasons, 1. Wolfe's forum requests guides even if the character hasn't been fully developed yet, (my dwarf is lvl 42) and 2. I've seen a lot of gun Dwarf guides but I've yet to come across melee guides for Dwarves.
What attracted me to the Dwarf class is there versatility. Want to fight up close and personal, the Dwarf can do that. Want to mix it up with ranged combat, the Dwarf can do that. Want to play a Magic Find character, the Dwarf can definitely do that GRINS. Add in skills such as Flamethrower and Cannon Blast and you have a well rounded character that can handle anything the game can throw at him. Provided of course you don't want to ride a horse!
For the melee Dwarf you are going to want to focus on a build that
a. Raise your hit points so you can take a beating in battle
b. Raise your Armor and Resistance values
c. Lower your Combat Arts Regeneration time
With those three points in mind, I humbly present my build.
Attributes
Attributes are easy, simply max out Physical Regeneration.
Skills
When you start off try to focus on Weapon Lore, Constitution and Dwarven Lore as much as possible. Personally I find that it's easiest to raise skills by multiples of ten, i.e Raise Weapon Lore to 10, then raise Constitution to 10, then Dwarven Lore to 10, then Weapon Lore to 20, and so on. Once you have those skills to a level that you are happy with work on raising Concentration, Weapon Technology, Armor and a Weapon Lore skill of your choice (personally I chose Axe Lore) I'll leave your level 50 skill open for you to decide as the previous six skills are the main skills for this build.
Combat Arts
I use two main combat arts in this build is Vehemence for attack and War Cry for defense. Vehemence requires you to have a two handed weapon, so if you don't want to fight without a shield you'll need to pick another CA. Wrath would be a good substitute. I use War Cry as part of a combo that I'll explain later on.
Dwarven Technology
Like many other dwarf players I use Flamethrower for crowd control. I used to use Mortar Grenade for long distance fighting and for those opponents that run away. Unfortunately Mortar Grenade has a major display bug that can crash the game if you use it for too long, so I've switched to Cannon Blast. I'm hoping that the MG bug will be fixed in an upcoming patch (assuming one is ever released) because it is far better then Cannon Blast. I use Dwarven Armor and Dwarven Steel in a combo with War Cry. Lastly I use Entrench for defense.
Strategy
Ok here are a few combat situations.
One on One: Just take them out with your weapon. Use Vehemence if the monster is particularly powerful (like a dragon).
Dwarf verses 1-3 monsters: Vehemence is your friend here. Not only will it severely damage your main opponent, it will also damage the other two monsters in the group as well.
Dwarf verses 3+ monsters: Say hello to Entrench and Flamethrower. Entrench really gives you a defensive boost and Flamethrower can take out a group faster then you can say “Anybody have light?” If you have a really powerful mob, then use the Defensive combo of War Cry, Dwarven Armor and Dwarven Steel.
Equipment
I'm not going to say much here as I believe that equipping your character is a matter of personal choice. Having said that I'll make a few general suggestions. Outfit your self with the best weapon and armor of your choice that you can find. Personally I use two handed axes / hammers for my weapon of choice . I would also recommend socketing your equipment with Life Leech and Resistances.
Conclusion
I've found this build to be a lot of fun. I hope you have a great time playing it as well and that you've found this guide to be helpful. Any comments or suggestions on improving this build would be very welcome.
I wish you all the very best with your Dwarf!
