It due to the fact that all food that we eat here has been Americanized, which basically means take the healthy food base from another country and find ways to inject fat into the cells and increase the portions 10 times. It works pretty well too. There are a bunch of foods that I have had while visiting other countries that I did not like, but once it is Americanized I love it, but there are also a bunch of foods that taste better before they have been Americanized, so I guess its a good trade off.

This is what I want to know.... if there is so much fat in Chinese food then why is it that every time I eat it I get hungry again in only an hour or so? You'd think the fat would keep me full :6:

I believe it has to do with the overall density of the food. When you think about it much of it is noodly, or veggies, both of which while they can make you full at first either have little calories, the veggies, or digest fast, the noodles for the carbs. If you eat things like meats, cheeses and certain kinds of breads you will be full much longer since it takes so long to digest them. Whenever I eat Chinese food I get hungry not to long after and I can also eat a ton more of it at one time then many other foods.

Yes, you should get some then. I had been craving some for a few months and then finally got a little on Monday, so I am a little more happy now, but I still want to do a buffet.

If it is only a half mile then you could always walk. And if you do it will make you feel better about eating a 2000 calorie dinner, or atleast that is what I do if I need justification.

I've always had the philosophy that if it tastes good, eat it I dont worry at all about the calorie side of food. I've always had a fast metabolism so I could eat anything I wanted and it wouldn't show, Now I'm getting a bit older cough cough, so I do need to be a little more careful but not that much. I'll do my crash diet in a few weeks and be back to summer (Prechild) shape in no time. LOL Ok now that sounds bad! I think I need to lose about 10-15 to get back to normal me.

Ah, so you are one of the lucky evil people I do not like. You basically burn off the same amount of calories, or more, in the act of chewing the food then what you are eating. I am not that lucky and have to goto the gym and do other physical things a lot to support the diet I like, otherwise I would become an elephant and break through things.

I haven't had Chinese food in probably 3 or 4 months... it's too greasy I use to be one of those metabolism people.. but I stopped running daily and now I'm gaining weight. It's not much, and I can still eat a hell of a lot and not gain anything, but I do see the effects of not exercising.

Hmmm so you love and hate our food eh? Wolfe, you get hungry because of cell hunger. Basically, food that go straight into fats (white sugar, some saturated fat complex/compound) are absorbed readily. They are stored almost immediately after they are digested and so even if the remnants of what you ate for dinner or lunch is still in your stomach, the brain "thinks" you're still hungry because it didn't get what it is supposed to. It's a vicious cycle. You eat this type of food and you get hungry. You know you're full, but the brain thinks otherwise because the nutrients were already absorbed. If there is no sugar, fat or something else that the digestive system can absorb and distribute to the metabolism, the metabolism will still demand it. Thus, this "demand" is the brain thinking that the metabolism still does not have it's ration. When in fact it already did.... it just went straight into those love handles. The 3 S' you have to avoid if you wanna lose them handles: Sugar (white), Saturated Fat and Salt. The first converts easily to stored fat, the second is worst and the last can either dehydrate you in the wrong amounts or store more water for the fat deposits. Well Chinese food is generally greasy. That is what makes it so tasty. The grease contains a lot of fatty enzymes (?) or whatever, that activates a lot of willing tastes buds. The same thing that MSG stimulates if it is added to food. This of course is bad, coz it tends to feed your hunger center in the brain more impulses as the rain of stimuli floods your tongue's tastes bud. At the same time, and at some point, it also hinders your satiety center (not to a full stop though) and this becomes binge eating. Ideally Chinese food should be de-greased, which I sometimes do when I cook it. I found out though, that it becomes somewhat 50% bland. You can degrease a gourmet if it is good for the ref. The grease/lard usually rises to the top and crusts. Once it does, remove the grease crust and reheat the dish. It will have the same taste to some degree, minus the fat.

I assume the love/hate comment was for me? I do have to say though that most places I do love the food, although not many of the places that have claimed to be authentic have been as good to me, but I think they may have done something to make it more healthy like you talked about. But since you said it is supposed to be greasy I have to doubt those places even more. I am curious since you live in SF if you ever made it to the San Jose are and went to a place called Fung Lum? If you did then is that place truly authentic? They are by far my favorite place to get Chinese food at and everybody always has said they are the real deal. I think the family moved from China in the 50s or so to open the place, although sadly I think they moved back a year or so ago so the place closed down. But the place looks like it was teleported right out of China and placed in the states. I loved the huge double doors it had to get in that were like 20 feet high, 6 or so inches thick and like 5 feet wide each. There was also a fish pond inside I would always watch as a kid. I have heard there is another one though in Universal Studios, so I am going to have to visit there sometime if the one in San Jose is indeed gone.

Well the love/hate was in general . I've heard of Fung Lum, but I never went to the place personally. Too bad they closed, it would have been fun to try other places. Authentic Chinese restaurants are moderately hard to find in the US. Some genuine cooking techniques can be found in remote areas, and some of course in China Town. But with these restaurants streamlined for more western business, it's hard to tell nowadays
